Nestling in the hills above Llanwrtyd Wells and Llangammarch Wells is Caban Cwmffynnon, a century old barn converted into a comfortable bunkhouse. It is an ideal base for the individual hosteller or backpacker, families and groups.
It is easily accessible to the Brecon Beacons and the Elenydd range of hills, and activities can range from hill-walking, mountain biking, pony-trekking and Duke of Edinburgh's Award training, whilst there is ample scope for the painter and naturalist.
The rivers Irfon and Wye are within easy reach for the canoeist.
For the backpacker, it's a chance to wind down after the noise and rush of life in the town or city, a chance to see the real landscape of Mid-Wales, with its beauty and tranquility. A possibility to see the wildlife on a country walk, cycle or on horseback. For the walker, there are a myriad of paths ranging from open moorland to wooded valleys. Bryan and Antoinette who also run Dinefwr Treks, a guided walking holiday company, can either take you on some of their favourite walks, or provide you with routes for you to explore.
The mountain-biker would be in his element. It is potentially the best area in Britain for mountain-biking, and there are developments underway for the area to be the centre of cycling in Britain. Several routes ranging from 30 miles for the experts, to family routes of 8 to 10 miles have been way-marked, with a huge choice of other routes.
A mountain-bike route guide is now available written by Tim Woodcock.
All these routes can either be started from the Caban, or the start is within 3 miles of the bunkhouse.
The road cyclist is also catered for, with the Caban being close to Route 8 of the Sustrans National Cycleway.
Other local routes are also available catering mainly for the family. In conjunction with other Bunkhouses in the area, we arrange Bunk-to-Bunk cycle routes, where you are provided with the route and your luggage is transported on to your next stop. All meals are provided.
The first Pony Trekking Association in Wales was formed in nearby Llanwrtyd Wells in 1956, and today there are two businesses who provide trekking for novices and the experienced rider alike.
And the now world famous Man v Horse race is held annually in June in Llanwrtyd Wells and the bunkhouse is an ideal base to stay the weekend either as competitor or to watch the spectacle.
